Gizmo does bark if someone knocks or rings my doorbell, or even hears someone out walking near my town home at night. Because we live in a nice beach community, I highly encourage him, because it is a prime area for burglaries. His barking alerted us a couple weeks ago in the middle of the night, and we woke to find a stranger out in common area of the property with a flashlight, who we quickly called the police for.

As soon as I say it's ok Gizmo, he stops barking. He's just protecting his and our home, and I am glad he does, as my husband is a firefighter and works many nights where I am home alone :-) he's a blessing to me, as I know a stranger would rather go to the house with out a dog, then the one that is drawing attention by continuos barking :-) I am so proud of him that he does protect our home, and stops barking when he knows everything is ok :-) I give him a treat for the warnings so he knows he is doing the right thing. The funny thing is, his bark sounds much bigger than he is when he's doing a warning bark, yet it's super a super cute little bark when he's playing, so I can tell the difference :-)
