Dogs with liver shunts will NOT die if properly cared for. You need to have a Bile Acid Test done on her to see if the shunt is operable. I would take her to a vet (an internal med specialist perhaps) that is familiar with these problems. You may love your vet, and they may be very good, but a vet that would prescribe lactulose without changing the diet seems to me to be a vet that is not very familiar with liver shunts. This baby needs to be on a prescription diet AND lactulose until you figure out a game plan. You are the only voice your baby has and she needs you to find the best care available for her!
