Hi and Welcome to YT!
To use the Gathering foot, be sure to place the fabric underneath the foot. The slot is for adding fabric that will not be gathered. (I made this error myself, lol)
Increasing the top thread tension and/or using a longer stitch will create a fuller gather.
I always leave long threads at each end which allows me to make manual adjustments when sewing is completed (like hand gathering).
