A choke collar and or a pinch collar is a tool, just like a harness is a tool, each one when used properly have their time and place in training. Every dog has a different personality, and can exhibit different behavioural traits. It is important that large breed dogs be under control at all times. Sometimes it takes a whole lot longer than 8months to insure this. At 90 lbs or more at 8 months sometimes you need to use what you have to, to insure that happens. I double collared Magic for almost one year and a bit, to insure I had him under control on our daily walks. That is with one pinch collar and one regular collar. I had a training handle on the pinch, and the regular lead on the regular collar. Of course the large breeds do not suffer from CT, but a choke collar should remain seated up and under their jawline, not centered on their neck.

For a Yorkie a choke chain is never needed. How-ever harnesses in early training are best for sure, until your dog learns not to pull on lead. At this point in time AKC and CKC competitive obedience trials demand the use of a collar and a lead on all breeds.
