I certainly agree, that contacting the Authorities (Animal Control) is better than stealing the Dog, and, there were no statements in Post 1 that the residence seemed abandoned. Country Folks don't always handle their animals like those who live in the City.
But, as several have pointed out, one can just simply go up to the door and knock. However, in Texas rural areas, it's better if you stayed in your Vehicle and honked. It's possible that the little guy have a much larger Pack Mate, who would not be amenable to your violation of their territory.
