HA, that's not the way it works around here !
Actually, those "specials" are daily for us. I have four bowls for that, and it's usually the (meat) scraps and extra veggies which we don't consume during the dinner meal. With four rather robust animals (5, 8, 9 & 13 lbs) it's that one better not blink, or what he was eating will be stolen by a very quick pass over his bowl by another.

That "gobbling" is (by their own choice) is limited to that event...
Once that is finished, my guys go back to their normal consumption rates, which are spread individually out through the day, and there's no gobbling/resource issues at all.

I find that leaving food out for them 24/7 is a blessing (for me)...
It's SO much easier than delving it out at a certain time/amount.
IMHO, either is a habit which "we" create for them, and with a bit of restraint on our part (being firm about it) can change their desire for those "special/rather expensive" meals, to a diet which they control, not us.

Many think that Dry is not adequate for their needs...
That's not so, besides the Wellness I mentioned, there are several very healthy Dry Foods available, which meet out guys dietary needs quite well.

I do one thing for my guys, which not many do...
I leave three different types of food out (in separate bowls) for them 24/7.
I have a bowl each of Wellness, Beneful and Purina, and with their normal consumption, have to fill (about 2 cups) one of those bowls up about once a day. Remember, that's with 4 animals eating. They seem to really enjoy the variety (beef/fish/foul) which is available.

One other thing that contributes greatly to their general health...
My guys are XXActive. We go out for a jog/hunt along the Bayou every day. They run/chase prey at top speed, and run from observation points on the second floor of the house, all the way out to the end of our property (via a Doggy Door) many times a day, to "protect" their territory from intruders like the Mail Man, or vicious stray Cats or a Possum or two.

I allow them to eat "Raw" too, but, insist they catch it themselves
