Caleb had started marking already (and humping certain stuffed toys). He's 7mths, we had him neutered last week..but he's 6lbs. Yours is small, have you spoke to the vet? I'd get him done if your adding a female, but only if the vet thinks it's the right thing to do...and if he's a healthy dog.
Neutering is a worry, we had a black lab die on the table, but he was revived, so it can happen. We've had dogs all our life and he's the only one to do this. I think 99% of the time it works out well...but most of us find it a scary time. If you do have him neutered and work, I'd arrange some time off, Caleb was so sore and unhappy for the first two to three days after, we've never had such a sore dog before, even on meds. He needed extra care and lovin' after.
