I have one that attacks the brush or comb when I encounter a tangle...& he tends to mat, he has thick soft cottony hair. So what I do is cut them off w/mini blunt nosed scissors. Can't tell that it was cut off. You can also snip into the mat & help loosen it & brush or comb it out.
Make sure you're using a good conditioner after shampooing, it will help keep the hair manageable for a few days & keep the tangle away.
