So sad....Even in the summer, i worry about leaving my boys outside unattended. Anyone could steal the dog....they are easily hurt by other animals(hawks, skunks, possums, other dogs etc etc)....heck, my moms dog had to be rushed to the emergency room for a bee sting and it would have died had she not gave it an antihistamine for the trip to the vets.

For the life of me, I just don't see why someone wouldn't crate the dog inside instead of leaving it outside.

I am guessing the Humane Society may come out and check on the little one to at least make sure it's got food, water and shelter. Sadly, if they give it that, I am not sure there is much they can do unless the dog is hurt and in immediate danger of dying.

If it's out running loose, the humane society or animal control may be able to do something about that though. If someone picks up a dog in our area, it costs money to get it back out and if it's not licenced with a rabies vaccination, you are looking at a bigger fine. I know some even charge more if you can't prove the animal has been spayed or neutered. Maybe if they had to dig in their pocketbook, they might think about taking better care of their dog, since obviously the thought of it running away or getting hurt doesn't seem to bother them much.

Of course on the other hand, who knows if they'd even bother to call around to the humane society or animal control to look for their lost dog. I have a really hard time understanding why someone would get a dog if they are just going to leave it chained up outside all day.
