My laundry room has a gate in front of the door, our pup squeezed right thru it. I know have a playyard in there for him. So, I vote for playpen or play yard. Make sure you get one he won't be able to climb later on.
Another reason for the pen, they can chew on anything in the room if they are left to roam free.
