I'm pretty new to the yorkie world. But, based on what I have learned so far, it sounds like your Gunner has a cotton coat. Jasper is more of a silky coat. It seems kind of thin on his head and he never gets tangles or matts. I believe cotton coats have very think hair and tend to matt. I hope this information helps you.
