It is an interesting thought. Dogs and cats that roam freely outside would sure need their whiskers. I would never consider cutting a cat's whiskers. They are useful for gauging how wide a hole they are considering sticking their head into is and if they are going to fit. Besides, I think a cat would be horribly mortified to have it's whisker's removed.

Long haired dogs often need to have their whiskers trimmed according to how the owner likes to cut them. I leave Gracie's facial hair long so she gets to keep her whiskers although you really can't see them for the most part. Some people think it is just much easier to keep the face clean if they trim the whisker area. An indoor dog is not going to suffer from having it's whiskers trimmed.
