This was in accordance with my vet's advice, and was only slightly inconvenient having to go through one heat cycle and protect them from getting pregnant.
He also added that going through one heat cycle does not increase chance of mammary cancer, but every heat after does increase. Also, studies are showing a link to spay before 1st heat to urine incontinence in females later (more so in larger dogs than Yorkies,). |
Dog Breast Cancer says that when spayed before there first heat they have a 0.05% chance of getting mammary cancer and then when spayed after there first heat the chance is 8% and then jumps to 26% when spayed after there second heat. So there is a less of a chance of them getting mammary cancer when spayed before there first heat. Also from personal experience I know there is a difference in there mammarys when being spayed before there first heat and after. Callie's nipples are flat they look just like little dots but the other dogs I have grown up with and most recently my uncle's dog who was not spayed until after her first heat has full actual nipples. So that shows me that there obviously is a different in the growth of he mammarys.
