I can tell you that my 10 year old male was fixed when he was 7 years old...after he was used as a stud dog for a breeder. He does lift his leg to pee, but he doesn't try to hump anything.

I think it also helped his personality out. He's very fearful of strangers, but he is less fearful than he used to be.
