Usually with a heat cycle they swell a lot and you see a bloody discharge in the beginning of the heat and then it turns to light pink or no color at all when the female is ready to be bred.
I would be a little concerned if she has a brown discharge. It could indicate an infection of some kind. You might want to have the vet check her. Do you have any intact males in your household?
