Mini Tutorial: an easy way to take in a baby shirt I do a lot of crafts, but I have very little experience with machine sewing. I took 1 sewing class in middle school and made a knitting needle roll last year.
I couldn't find a dog shirt in the color I needed for Lola's costume, so I had to find a way to alter a baby onesie without taking out the seams. I also wanted to be able to take it out in case she gets bigger.
The shirts in the pictures aren't for her costume, the pink one was a baby onesie and the blue one started out as a shirt.
Lola is about 5lbs and the clothes are 0-3 months.
It's not the proper way to do things, but it's easy and it works.
This way works on shirts with the shoulder flap things that make the neck hole bigger. I'm not sure what to do with normal necked t-shirts; I might sew on an angle so I take from the body but not from the neck.
1. First I cut the bottom part off, leaving as much length as possible because Lola has a long body.
2. Hem the shirt
3. Turn the shirt inside out with the part that'll be on the belly up. Take from the middle the amount you need to take in, pin it, sew straight up. (see first blue shirt picture, sew along the pink line)
To figure out the size I used a shirt from petsmart as a guide, safety pinned it, and tried it on her.
4. Adjust the shirt so it's laying normally again, still belly side up, and sew an inch or so on the top and bottom to tack it down. (see second blue shirt picture, sew along the pink lines)
I forgot to turn the blue shirt inside out for the pictures; I haven't sewn it yet. |
