Lots of discharge, blinking, and rubbing are not normal. Not all regular vets are well -versed in eye issues. I would take Optimus Prime to an ophthalmologist. He could have a corneal scratch, dry eye, or a number of other things. There is a simple set of tests and an ophthalmologist will be able to tell quickly what the problem is and give you the correct solution.
Max had corneal ulcers and the irritation caused a hair to grow under his lid. He had a simple laser procedure to zap the hair and was fine after that.
