Thank you all so much for the replies.
I took my little Baxter to the vets and it was definitely fleas - likely to have come from my cats which was a shock as they are all up to date with treatments but I guess they are out a lot so it can happen.
I was given some treatment stronger than frontline as the vets said they have noticed some recent tolerance to frontline.
So far so good, all bedding etc in the house washed at high temp and house sprayed.
