As long as you have everything lined up the pup is going to need, he will be fine. The first year of Peanut’s life he was alone about 12 hours more than a couple times a week. I worked 12 hour days and Hubby did as well. We would both come home when we could, sometimes we weren't able to. Peanut was left food, water, toys, etc and he always did fine. Anytime I was off, it was his time. Weekends were always spent with him too. Some people make it such a big ordeal, however just because you work doesn't mean you shouldn't have a puppy.. it can be done.
Now a days you can even set up a little cam and hook it up to your smart phone and you can check on him through the cam!! Hubby bought me a security camera set for the house, inside and outside cameras.. it has the app so I can download and watch Peanut while I’m at work!! I can spy on the little bug, see what he really does all day!! LOL
