I'm not sure which thread you are referring to, but I can tell you from growing out Max's coat, I didn't do anything special with his body. I just let it grow and kept it combed.
The mustache was the only difficult part, keeping it out of his eyes. I combed it several times a day to train it to lay down. Some people have suggested wetting it down a little before combing. I also used a tiny dab of Vaseline from a clean jar to keep hairs out of his eyes.
Once the topknot was long enough to go in a band, I used Vellus Satin Creme to encourage growth and help keep it in the band.
