It's like a paste, you can put a little on your finger and let her lick it off. In the event that she has a hypoglycemic episode (low blood sugar) you would rub it directly onto the roof of her mouth. She is very young to be going to a new home so you should give her the nutrical if she is seeming sluggish, shivering, not eating well, after a long period of play, etc. Check her gums frequently. You want them to be pink. If they are pale, that's another reason to give nutrical and make sure she is drinking water. Keep the room she stays in warm and I agree about setting up an exercise pen for her, even if only when your 4 year old is around.
About Wellness Small-Breed puppy, that is what I feed my Rosie. She is 9 months old now but I have kept her on the puppy formula because it is supposed to support growth of puppies/nursing moms and she is very small. I don't know if it's the food or she was just born to be small, but I find the food does not seem to be helping her grow/gain weight. The kibble size is nice and small, it never upsets her tummy, and she doesn't have any tear staining with it.
