Worms came to mind, especially if he had fleas, you can buy diatomacceous earth, human grade from a health food store or pet supply, sprinkle it on his food about 1 teaspoon a day and do it for a couple of weeks.
It will kill any internal pests and is 100% natural and harmless. Just don't get it up your nose or breath it in, so keep your face and your dogs face out the bag
