That would be horrible if he decided to take that leap off the stairs.

Maybe you could find some nice coordinating fabric and have some panels made to weave in and out of the rails and tied off somehow. You wouldn't even have to sew them, measure your stairs, buy the fabric by the yard, fold it to the proper height and just iron it folding under the rough edges. You could use safety pins to attach it. Maybe even a vinyl would work, its sturdy and comes in a verity of colors. No sewing or ironing with that. Just cut it to length & proper height and attach, maybe with some grommets.
