We've always had big dogs, Caleb is our first toy breed. I have to totally agree with you, you have to know your dog. The first time I did aversive training, he was devastated- could see it in his stance and face. So it's gently, gently, positive training here. In the garden we do leave a line on him, just to hold, if he chooses to disobey (ie chase the cat) but no jerking or negative training. He's smart and so wants to please.
I love how willing you are to help others, and how you word things, so people can take it or leave it, depending on their situation and dog. You've helped me, as I got a little rusty, since it's been years since I done puppy training.
