It's not as much fun for for the dog but we make rest/fun stops if we are traveling far and Tibbe has learned to settle in and lie down during the car trips. I wish the carrier could fit on a box or something so it was up and he could see out but don't think that could be as secure. I worry about that airbag killing him in even a little crash as much as I do him crashing into the dashboard or something. At least in the hardshell airline carrier, he's safe from the airbag and flying missiles within the car, too, should the worst happen. I put his bigger stuffed toys in with him to help cushion him. Wish there were a more scenic answer for him though.
