I found a breeder that seems great, offers a one year health guarantee, and all of that, but she said the puppy is a runt and may only hit four pounds. I don't know that I want the runt!
This is a little stressful! |
I agree with Ann, but emailing isn't enough, they receive hundreds of emails a day. You need to stand out from the crowd and show that you can offer an excellent Yorkie home. I always recommend calling and asking if it's a good time to talk. Think of questions to ask about their breeding program or if they think a Yorkie is the right dog for you. By the way, the breeder who called the dog a runt, I love her!!! Most breeders would call it a "teacup" and jack up the price 1000 dollars. Good breeders know that the smaller dogs shouldn't be bred, but they make great pets for the right people. It's possible for a good breeder to breed two different breeds, but an awful lot of breeders mix chi's and yorkies to get a smaller dog, and I'd be wary of that, the "yorkies" tend to have huge ears. To answer your question on looks, I believe experience breeder can predict what a dog will look like as it grows older. I think I've even learned to be able to predict. By 12 weeks you really have a pretty good indication of how they will look as adults, especially if you see the parents. I can't answer your question on guarantee, so many offer what seems to be long guarantees, but they really cover nothing. Here's a great article on finding a good breeder.
