I'm in your shoes, looking at first-time dental cleanings for my boys. It doesn't matter how diligent you are, genetics and small mouths play a big role (although I keep telling my boys that if they would let me use the Sonic Care, they probably wouldn't need to go in).
Some people recommend soft food the night after a cleaning, especially if extractions are required. A lot of doggies are just fine afterwards.
I'll keep Gizmo in my prayers for an easy dental.
