The retractable patio awnings I have seen are definitely waterproof. It's more of a permanent solution vs. an umbrella. The awning actually attaches to your house. Here's a link I found after doing a quick search...SunSetter Awnings - Retractable Deck and Patio Awning.
After looking online, I think they actually might be a little more expensive than I had originally thought. Sorry. Not sure what your budget looks like.

I'm actually thinking about replacing mine with a fabric awning. Mine's metal, maybe aluminim? And I swear the aluminum absorbs so much heat & makes that side of the house a lot hotter in the summer. It'd be great if I could install solar panels in it. I don't think that's in my budget though.
