Oh this topic has made me laugh!

One of our rescues is a marking dog and when he first came the little sod hopped on the coffee table and marked my drink!
In all seriousness marking can often be a worried behaviour, a way of avoiding conflict and the dog relieving personal tension. It is certainly not the dog trying to assert himself as the boss. That theory is far too simplistic.
I agree with Austria, Sulamk - that man should be banned everywhere
