Default cat flap toilet training was going well but now it isnt

I have a 3 month old yorkiepoo. The first few weeks I started training him with puppy pads by the back door. Then since then I have trained him to go out the cat flap to the toilet and he now doesn't have any puppy pads. He stays in the kitchen most of the time with a baby gate. I take him into the lounge with me when I'm home to watch him. He has been going through the cat flap for three weeks now. So today I thought I could open the baby gate and give him a bit more space so he had the hallway as well. But he has done two wees on the carpet. I thought if he wanted to go he would have gone straight through cat flap and outside like usual. Was it to soon to give him that extra space? Am I doing something wrong should I still be going outside with him to reward and praise him when he goes toilet? Any advice would be really helpful

Thanks
