I agree that if a loose dog is spanked when caught, the dog is even less likely to want to be caught the next time. I am a lousy trainer, but I believe that hugging my boys with relief when I've caught them has made them more likely to come to me. It's not a reward hug. They are sensitive enough to discern a relief-from-fear hug.
