We always had a garden when I was growing up and there used to be these huge black and yellow spiders that would hang around the tomatoe plants. When you would get close to them they would shake their web.
It's a good thing you had a glove on that day. I don't blame you for starting to fling things to get the darn thing off. I bet the neighbors were wondering what the heck was going on.
