What great replies to the flea & tick med questions! It is interesting to see all the opinions about the use of the Flea/Tick Products!
We are in the lovely, western side of the Shenandoah Valley of Va. We have had an unusually wet summer and everything is still green...no crispy, dried-out August/September foliage. Luckily, the thunderstorms have kept house fly numbers way down, but the ticks and mosquitoes are all around. Not only do we have the suburban species, but we have the rural and woodland types of disease carriers from all the wildlife in the state & national parks. Taffy gets a blood test at our vet's each year for Heartworm & Lymes disease before the vet gives us a new year's supply of Heartgard Plus Chews. It is actually cheaper to get the blood work test + 12 doses of Heartguard at our county vet's hospital all in one visit than to have the blood test done to get the Heartworm prescription and then take the prescription to another store or mail order co. We don't get 'hard frosts' here consistently till end of October to kill off fleas, then the ticks are back out again in April if it's warm. Taffy loves his walks in the countryside, but we have to keep him well protected, and renew his rabies shot every 3 years since there are many wild animals in the woods behind pastures & yards.
