I agree with the others, I think you need to have a discussion with your Husband.

Not to defend your MIL but I think we are a more dog conscious society now. We know more, we tend to treat them with a little more respect and care simply because we know better and learned from experience.

I don't want to raise any feathers with my opinion, I just remember when I was younger it was acceptable to care for our dogs in a way that is not acceptable now (due to experience).
