It's natural to want to keep your little one safe. But to be honest, the one I would be annoyed with is your DH and not your MIL. She did you all a favor by accommodating Zoey and it wasn't fair to her or your nieces to expect them to change plans because your DH needed help. It sounds like she used her best judgment and kept Zoey safely in her carrier.

This is something to work out with DH about what to do in the future with Zoey when neither of you can be there.
