If my choices are between being out a few bucks and potentially losing my pets, guess which one I'm going to choose.

I'm glad your vet is seeing you. Vaccine reactions can occur with any vaccine, be it the first or the 20th. It's good your regular vet will be made aware of it so you can discuss any modifications to the vaccine schedule.
