As far as differences - absolutely! Max could step on one your tinies and break a bone. I think there's probably a lot more to be cautious about with a dog under, let's say 6 pounds. Max is 16 pounds, and sure he hurts his knees jumping off furniture but I don't think I would step on him because I didn't see him.
Its hard to let go of something that plagued you your whole life. I have stepped on Callie because I didn't see her but most of the time it is during a thunderstorm when i should know she is underfoot but it has happened.
