In my short life (19 years) I have had multiple sewing machines die on me from over use and I know how awful the feeling is.
The best sewing machine on the market is a Bernina but those are pricey, I have a Brother machine that I absolutely love and has so far been able to handle anything I throw at it. I wouldn't suggest purchasing a newer Singer as the quality in the newer machines have gone down but an older one with metal parts would probably be the best.
