Everyone has given great advice above. I had to hand feed almost all of Max's kibble his first year. He liked to perform tricks for each piece. I sped up the process sometimes by playing "Kibble in the Kong", loading the kibble into the Kong toy and making a big production out of it.
Getting them excited about eating helps. Adding a second dog changed Max's eating habits.
As Rhetts_mama wrote, cat kibble can make him sick. It's too high in fat for a dog.
