With the prevention products used now it is generally considered safe to give them even in heartworm positive cases (check with your fet of course).
Depending on the test done it can take six months to show a positive after infection. So testing right away probably won't show anything even if something is there and it would be unsafe to stop the drug for six months. So you should continue to give it.
