I would try very hard to find the entry area that the mice came in through. If one can get in so can a whole herd? of them. Check around where your pipes come up from the cellar and stuff steel wool in any spaces that you find around the pipes or any small holes you find that go down or into a wall space. Those mice can live inside your walls and make a horrible icky mess. Check your foundation for any cracks or holes that they could possibly squeeze in through. You would be amazed at what tiny openings they can get in through.
