The food thickener that I have a pet peeve with is xanthan gum. It is basically chemically processed bacterial slime and seems to be present in more products than carrageenan is. If you google it, you will also find that it may be associated with some health problems. It is added to most salad dressings to make them thicker and less prone to separating. Personally, I prefer the good old days when all you had to do was shake the salad dressing bottle really hard just before pouring.

And here is another disgusting food product made with gellan gum (also processed bacterial slime): Orbitz (soft drink) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Drinking orbitz is like drinking a cup of someone else's saliva. I guess everyone else thought so too since it didn't stay on the market for long.
