The problem with "no" is it doesn't have a direct meaning. It could mean too many things which can confuse the pup.
I agree, try other keyword commands.

For barking, try quiet or enough!

For other things like chewing on baseboards, try "uh uh uh" or making a clicking sound with your mouth.

Redirecting attention is good for lots of things. Does he know basic commands like come, sit, stay? You can get his attention by asking him to perform one of these.

I also withdraw attention and announce that I am leaving the room when the boys won't listen to me. I go where they can't follow.
