The trip is not that far we usually make the trip, stay overnight then head back. You can easily swing by on one of your days off and head back next morning. I would suggest getting a playpen for your pups until they are used to the routine of the new house. I do this drive every other month with my two pups and my two kids. My family lives all over so cal so we do this drive everytime we visit. From Stockton you can just take the 99 down, make a couple potty breaks for the pups.
