I agree that when comparing PC vs Mac, you have to compare a comparable PC and not a budget one.  That isn't really fair.  I did manage to buy my Toshiba Satellite laptop on sale for $300.  Can't rattle off the specs because I'm not that savvy, but it can handle running lots of big programs and multiple browsers all at the same time.
