It's pretty natural. As Minnie got up in age I had no idea how I would cope and knew it would just crush me when it eventually happened... and it ended up about 10x worse than I expected it to be when we lost her. I guess we need to count ourselves lucky that we have bonds strong enough to make losing them a living hell. My life was so much richer for the time I had with Minnie after we rescued her. I have to say getting a young yorkie after about 6 weeks of grieving ended up being the best thing for me though. Cookie just melts my heart and helps make me happy again after I felt like a zombie for a while after Minnie died. I know the love of a dog is just so good for one's mental and physical health, and the dogs need us too.
