Default Constantly A tangled mess...

So, I've always dreamed of having a yorkie with a long coat and I finally thought I'd have my chance with the 2 year old male I recently adopted...but I see the dream slipping away one mat at a time. Heck, the little guy is even getting his nails caught in his mats when he is itching.

I've groomed at a boarding/grooming kennel and I used to show cockers, which have high maintenance coats, but I have NEVER came accross a coat as bad as my Ricky's. I brush him every day, at least 2 times a day...and it seems like the more I brush, the quicker it mats back up. He can get full blown mats in a matter of hours...and it's even worse when I put a shirt or harness on him. He also gets greasy fairly quickly...even though he gets a bath once a week. He does look good for about 2 days after a bath, and then it's back to the greasy matted mess.

His hair also grows much slower than my other yorkie(Princeton). I do a full groom/trim on Princeton twice a month whereas, I've only had to trim Ricky's feet and ears once in the 3 months I've had him.

His coat is multi colored and it's very straight...his front half is black and his pants area is grey. I am not sure if he is still loosing his puppy coat at 2 years old and it's a puppy coat that is making him so unmanagable or what.

I've shaved his belly and arm pits and last week I took the thinning shears to his coat to try to thin it out and that did help. But I am wondering if anyone has any advice on how I can salvage his coat. Come winter time, he is going to need to wear his sweaters here in Michigan and I just don't see how I can do it with the hair he's got, unless I can somehow tame it.
