I use a gathering foot, but if you don't have one, you can do a wide zigzag stitch over dental floss. Be careful to not catch the floss in a stitch. Then you can pull the floss from either or both ends to gather the fabric. it seems to gather easier than the two rows of stitching I learned years ago.
