I carry pepper spray on my keychain; one of my neighbors suggested wasp spray because you can shoot from a much greater distance. I also walk the dogs on a harness so I can pick them up quickly and safely.
I'm sorry you went through such a rough experience. It does seem unfair that we have to be the ones to watch out.
