I don't think a high protein diet can cause health problems, but if a dog has an existing problem, a high protein diet could make it worse. Some people believe that because Yorkies are so small, they need to have a ton of nutrition packed into every bite, when really eating more often will do the job.

Liver Shunt is common in the breed and high protein would definitely affect that. Some dogs have shunts, but are not diagnosed or show symptoms till they're older.
